The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (released as Sherlock Holmes in the UK) is a 1939 film released by Twentieth Century Fox. It is an adaptation 1899 play Sherlock Holmes by William Gillette, featuring the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle though there is little resemblance in the plots.

The picture is the second in the series of fourteen Sherlock Holmes film series released between 1939 and 1946 featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, it was the final film produced by Fox, and the last in the series to be set in the Victorian period. The further twelve films produced by Universal Pictures would take place in the times of release (i.e. the 1940s). George Zucco stars as Holmes’s nemesis Professor Moriarty.

The picture follows Sherlock Holmes and his assistant as they attempt to foil their archenemy Professor Moriarty who plots the theft of the Crown Jewels.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is a 1939 film based on the novel of the same name by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was directed by Sidney Lanfield and stars Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson.

It is among the best-known cinematic adaptations of the book, and is often regarded as one of the best. Because Fox was unsure that the film would be a success, and that Rathbone and Bruce would appear in more Sherlock Holmes films together, top billing went to Richard Greene, who was the film’s romantic lead. Rathbone was billed second. Wendy Barrie, who played Beryl Stapleton, the woman with whom Greene falls in love, received third billing, and Nigel Bruce, the film’s Dr. Watson, was billed fourth. In all their other Holmes films, Rathbone and Bruce would receive first and second billing respectively.

The Hound of the Baskervilles marks the first of the fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Rathbone and Bruce. It is also notable as the earliest known Sherlock Holmes film to be set in the Victorian period of the original stories; all previous Holmes films, had been updated to a setting contemporary with the films’ release. It is also the only film in the series to be a strict adaptation of a source material, while subsequent films in the series only incorporated elements of different Sherlock Holmes stories.

Al civico 221/b di Baker Street, a Londra, abita il più abile investigatore di tutti i tempi, il famosissimo Sherlock Holmes, che grazie al fedele amico Watson ha risolto numerosi e complicatissimi casi. Ma ciò che nessuno sa è che il dottor Watson è la mente geniale della coppia, e che Holmes in realtà si chiama Reginald Kincaid, un mediocre attore, ubriacone e donnaiolo che si è fatto una fama solidissima grazie alle intuizioni del medico.
Stanco di fare la parte del semplice ed ingenuo “assistente”, Watson decide di rivelare la verità alla stampa, ma un nuovo caso bussa alla porta: la Regina Vittoria in persona chiede a Holmes di indagare su un traffico di sterline false che ha invaso l’Inghilterra, dietro al quale si cela il bieco Moriarty. I due investigatori, stavolta con Watson che conduce le indagini e Holmes/Kincaid che fa da spalla, tra intuizioni più o meno corrette e mille peripezie, riescono a sconfiggere il genio criminale, che rimane ucciso.
Holmes viene acclamato per l’ennesima vittoria, e Watson capisce che non potrà mai svincolarsi dalla fama dell’amico e dal suo ruolo “nell’ombra”, ma davanti alla folla che lo applaude, Kincaid/Holmes decide di rivelare tutto, mettendosi “nell’ombra” e rendendo il meritato onore al dottore.
